The Detroit, Michigan native played his collegiate football at the University of Michigan, where he lead the team in receptions and receiving yards in his last two seasons. After a great college career, Derrick was the Cleveland Browns first round draft pick in the 1994 NFL Draft. In his rookie season he lead the playoff- bound Browns in receiving. He then joined the Baltimore Ravens for 1996 and 1997 seasons where he had two consecutive 1,000 yard seasons. He is the Ravens all-time leader in yards-per reception (16.6).

Derrick then joined the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent in 1998, where in his first year with the team he lead in receiving yards. In 2000, he set a team record for receiving yards in a season, with 1,391. The Chiefs quarterback that year was his former Michigan teammate, Elvis Grbac. Also, in 2000 he was named the Team MVP and the Chiefs Derrick Thomas Award Winner.

Derrick currently works at Cerner Corporation. In his free time he enjoys playing basketball, golf, and video games. Derrick, and his wife Kim, have three daughters, Alexis, Mackenzie, and Brooke.
